IDPs and Conflict-Affected Population

IFRC reported that a total of 20,172 internally displaced persons are now registered for assistance as a result of the conflict that began in February 2001. Approximately 12,517 IDPs stay with host families; 2,854 people are accommodated in 18 collective centers; and approximately 4,801 persons are partially displaced from their homes in Skopje and Tetovo.

The Red Cross Movement will re-examine the register of IDPs after the March food distribution cycle and a de-registration process is planned to begin at that time.

ICRC activities

During the month of February, ICRC distributed food aid to the 2,871 IDPs accommodated in collective centres as well as to 4,801 micro-displaced persons in Skopje and Tetovo.

Action Against Hunger (AAH - UK) and Intersos activities

During February and early March, AAH will conduct a final 2-month distribution of food to 15,613 needy residents of villages in the conflict-affected areas.

Intersos has begun to distribute food to approximately 13,900 planned longer-term IDPs accommodated with host families. This assistance is expected to continue through June 2002, but ECHO has not yet finalized the project end-date.

Host Families (accommodating refugees) and Social Cases

During February, Intersos will provide food assistance to 5,536 of the most vulnerable social case families. This assistance is also expected to continue through June 2002, but ECHO has not yet finalized the project end-date.

MPDL will continue with its complementary food assistance to host families accommodating refugees. ECHO will fund this programme through February 2002.

Refugees accommodated with Host Families and in Collective Centers

In February, UNHCR will distribute food aid to approximately 3,464 refugees in Macedonia.
