1. Rehabilitation
ECHO is ready to act immediately.
Up to 200, 000 Euros may be available for rehabilitation of schools. Upon
securing access, ECHO is ready to undertake rapid assessment of schools
in conflict affected areas themselves. They are also interested in funding
minor rehabilitation.
MICS is receiving Italian funds and are interested in getting involved
in rehabilitation.
Information on the availability of UNHCR QIPS funds was shared with NGOs:
US$ 30,000 can be made available, with schools being one of the priorities.
UNICEF will co-ordinate information on the rehabilitation process while
UNHCR will undertake a technical assessment of the school buildings.
Action: Agencies to provide
estimations of available funding and/or technical expertise. UNICEF to
collate the information into a database. Agencies to provide more specific
information about their priority activities next week.
2. Refugees
Collective centre Suto Orizari: Albanian speaking children will attend
PS Lirija instead of PS 26 Juli.
Collective centre Katlanovo: Albanian speaking children from grades I
to VIII will start attending PS Bratstvo-Edinstvo in Konjare on 1 October
2001.
UNHCR expects an answer from the villagers of Katlanovo whether Macedonian
speaking children from collective centre Katlanovo can attend the school
in their village.
UNHCR is providing snacks for refugee children who attend PS Braka Ramiz
i Hamid and PS 26 Juli.
3. Pupil kits
UNICEF is finalising the distribution of school materials and
textbooks for affected children from grades II to VIII.
OSI Macedonia has completed the distribution of textbooks and school materials
for grade 1 pupils.
4. School supplies
Some schools in the conflict areas and some of those that have
received most of the IDP pupils will need assistance in providing temporary
shelter and additional furniture.
UNICEF is ready to provide tents for the school in Arachinovo (upon receipt
of details of rehabilitation and future needs), and furniture for the
schools that received many IDP pupils.
5. AOB
The next Education Working Group meeting will be held
on 4 October 2001 at 3:00 p.m. in the UNICEF Conference Room.
