Reconstruction of objects damaged during the
conflict
18th September 2001
The Macedonian Center for International Cooperation
(MCIC) started the activities within its 'Return of Displaced Persons'
programme. Among other activities, this programme includes reconstruction
of individual housing objects, as well as public objects that suffered
minor damages.
On September 8th, MCIC started the renewal of public
infrastructure by repairing the school in the village of Brnjarci. The
school was hit by a bomb-shell, which completely destroyed the entrance
door and broke all the windows. MCIC fully repaired the damages and on
September 10th, with the beginning of the new school year, the school
was ready to use.
MCIC started the activities for reconstruction of individual
housing objects, as well. Priority is given to low-risk areas, such as
the municipalities of Aracinovo and Kumanovo.
MCIC participates in the damage assessment team with
four experts. After the categorisation and the detailed assessment of
the houses with minor damages, the reconstruction will start of nine houses
in the village of Lopate (out of 20 damaged houses) and in the village
of Brnjarci (where all 12 damaged houses will be repaired). All houses
were categorised in categories 1 and 2. This is the first reconstruction
of houses in Macedonia. The reconstruction activities will continue in
the future and will include new beneficiaries.
All supplies are provided by domestic suppliers/contractors.
The assets are provided through a cooperation agreement
with UNHCR and are a donation of the Canadian Government / CIDA.
Since the beginning of the crises, MCIC led by its
experience in Kosovo, is involved in planning concerning the reconstruction.
The documents on reconstruction of livelihoods issued by UNMIK in 2000
were translated and submitted to the Government.
All activities are run in co-ordination with
the Government of the Republic of Macedonia (through its Coordination
Body for Crises Management) and the United Nations High Commission for
Refugees (UNHCR). The procedure is entirely concordant to and is based
upon the Draft-Strategy of the Government of RM for reconstruction and
rehabilitation of damaged objects and roads in the crises areas.
